Introduction: Sculpting the Defense
While enemies in Siege Scape advance relentlessly from a single, known direction, they do so across a wide-open battlefield. There are no pre-set paths dictating their route. Instead, you dictate their movement through your strategic placement of towers and obstacles. Utilizing a helpful grid system for precise placement and to prevent overlapping, you have the freedom to build your defenses anywhere on the map, crafting the very landscape the enemy must navigate.
Gameplay: The Strategic Loop
Siege Scape features a distinct rhythm, alternating between careful preparation and automated combat:
Preparation Phase (Between Waves): This is your strategic window.
Wave Preview: Analyze the composition of the next enemy wave using the provided preview – identify threats, resistances, and potential swarm sizes.
Draw & Strategize: Draw cards from your customized deck. Assess your hand, considering the upcoming wave and your available resources.
Resource Management: Gather and spend resources wisely. (Resource system details are being refined).
Build & Upgrade: Play your cards to place new towers, traps, or obstacles onto any available grid square on the battlefield. Use upgrade cards or other mechanics to enhance existing defenses. This is where you actively build your maze, kill zone, or layered defense network.
Combat Phase (Wave Execution):
Initiate Wave: Once your preparations are complete, trigger the combat phase.
Enemy Advance: The previewed wave spawns from its single origin point and advances towards its objective.
Dynamic Pathfinding: Enemies navigate the battlefield based on the defenses you constructed. They will pathfind around your towers and obstacles, meaning your layout directly influences their route and engagement points.
Automated Combat: Your placed towers automatically engage enemies according to their programming and stats. Observe the effectiveness of your setup and identify weaknesses for the next preparation phase.
Deck Customization: Outside of combat, you'll curate your arsenal. Collect and choose from a diverse array of cards representing various towers, traps, obstacles, upgrades, and perhaps tactical abilities, tailoring your deck to your preferred defensive style. (Specific deckbuilding/card acquisition methods are under development).
Objective: Survive the increasingly challenging waves! Protect your base or achieve specific objectives by effectively designing defenses during the preparation phase that counter the previewed threats during the combat phase. (Specific game modes and win conditions are under development).

Strategic Grid Placement: Utilize the entire battlefield grid for your defenses. While snapping prevents overlaps, the freedom to build anywhere allows for intricate maze designs, efficient kill zones, and creative funneling not possible in games with limited build areas.
Anticipatory Defense: The loop of previewing the next wave and preparing defenses accordingly creates a deeply strategic experience focused on planning and counter-building.
Dynamic Path Creation: Since there are no fixed paths, your tower and obstacle placements actively shape the enemy's route, making layout design a primary strategic element.
Deep Card-Based Strategy: The interplay between your deck, card draw, resource management, and grid placement offers layers of tactical depth. Discover powerful synergies and card combinations.
High Replayability: Random card draws, varied enemy wave compositions, and the vast possibilities of grid-based construction ensure significant replay value.
Planned Progression: The goal is to include systems allowing players to unlock new cards, abilities, or potentially persistent upgrades over time, expanding strategic options (Note: Specific progression systems are still in design and subject to change).
Development & Vision
Siege Scape is currently under active development by Spawns Gaming LLC, primarily as a solo developer project. This means development is a journey of passion, learning, and iteration.
Learning in Public: As detailed in our devlogs, I'm leveraging all available tools, including AI assistance for coding where appropriate, while continuously learning and refining my skills in Unreal Engine and C++. Transparency about this process is important.
Gameplay First: The initial focus is heavily on nailing the core mechanics and ensuring the loop of preparation, placement, and automated combat feels fun and strategically engaging.
Art & Assets: Current visuals may utilize placeholder assets (including Synty Studios packs or temporary AI art experiments). The firm commitment is to commission professional, unique artwork and assets specifically for Siege Scape to establish its own distinct visual identity before final release.
Single-Player Focus: To ensure a polished, achievable, and tightly designed experience given the solo development context, Siege Scape is being developed exclusively as a single-player game.
